Novell Cloud Manager: There's An iPhone App For That: Page 2 of 2

Novell has updated its Novell Cloud Manager cloud management tool with a number of new features, including an application for access from an Apple iPhone. Novell Cloud Manager 1.1 also adds an enhanced ability to import existing hosts and virtual machines into the cloud. Cloud Manager was introduced in September to help enterprises manage private cloud environments that they operate within their own data centers.

The iPhone app, available from Apple's online App Store, allows IT managers to see the console user interface on their smartphones, provide access to their particular role-based views and make changes as needed.

The iPhone app is intended to make it easier for IT administrators to provision new cloud resources to co-workers who may be distributed globally and who may need approval outside the normal workday. "You can't let the human approval workflow slow you down," says Grubin.

Although initially available only on the iPhone platform, the remote management application could later be added to other mobile platforms such as RIM/BlackBerry, Google/Android or Windows Phone 7, but that would be determined by customer demand, Grubin says.

Novell is in the process of being acquired by Attachmate, which bid $2.2 billion for the company on Nov. 22. Simultaneously, Novell sold 882 software patents to a consortium organized by Microsoft for $450 million.
