Avaya is extending its Virtual Enterprise Network Architecture (VENA), which debuted last November, beyond the data center to the campus network, adding its virtualization capabilities to the company's Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) 8800 and 8600 products. By bringing network virtualization and IEEE Shortest Path Bridging (802.1aq) to the campus, current 8800 and 8600 customers can install, provision and manage real-time applications and services in minutes rather than days, says Avaya, whose ultimate vision is to virtualize the entire enterprise.
VENA simplifies the enterprise network from end to end and significantly reduces customer time to service, says Avaya. The architecture features a Virtual Services Fabric that enables one-touch provisioning for a variety of capabilities provided by Virtual Services Networks.
The company says that it helps increase network performance and efficiency, ensures resilience and reliability, and provides users with access to an always-on service that empowers communication anywhere, anytime, without interruption. This is all about giving customers choices on what, where and when to virtualize, says Avaya, while protecting their investments and extending the life of those assets.
The capabilities of Avaya VENA are available immediately to new ERS 8800 and 8600 customers. Existing customers whose platforms support Release 7.1 can upgrade by means of a software update. The company says its initial focus will be on its installed base and on organizations that have outgrown their existing networks.
Yankee Group's Zeus Kerravala, senior VP, said that Avaya is taking a somewhat unique approach by extending its offering beyond the data center to the campus. "Avaya's biggest challenge is proving it works and helping people understand, but, on paper, VENA is solid."
