Atrato Enhances Data Analysis to Boost Storage Performance: Page 2 of 3

Atrato describes its self-healing capability as "zero maintenance" and one that requires no drive swapping. By virtualizing all of the storage and keeping more than 10 percent as spare capacity, the system can easily shift workloads and data and rebuild when necessary.

Taneja says that is important for companies with petabytes or hundreds of terabytes of data that need to be protected. "How can you maintain that much capacity using traditional methods of RAID, for instance? The rebuild times alone would kill you," he says.

Atrato is targeting customers in the digital media markets like video-on-demand companies and digital studios as well as those seeking high performance like financial analysts and oil- and gas-exploration companies.

An entry-level system starts in the "tens of thousands of dollars range," Siewert says. The company came out of stealth last year and has 15 to 20 customers.
