The IT industry loves labels, and the label du jour is "software-defined." Vendors and industry groups are slapping it on everything. There's software-defined networking, software-defined storage, the software-defined perimeter and even software-defined buildings (who knew?). If your head's spinning from the plethora of software-defined this and that, we hope this guide provides some clarity. Welcome to the wide -- and sometimes wacky -- world of software defined.

inspiration
We want to thank John Herbert, a Network Computing moderator, for providing inspiration for this slideshow via his "Software-Defined Blog Post." John's frustration with the proliferation of the software-defined label led him to do a Google search and see just how bad the hype has gotten -- and it's bad.

Re: inspiration
Yes, we hope John forgives us for "borrowing" his idea. His original list was much funnier. We hope this piece provides a little humor but also serves as a bit of a reference for some of our befuddled colleagues ;)

Re: inspiration
Great guide, it inspired me to do a quick Google search to see whether bitcoin had been labeled as Software-Defined Money. Lucky, electronic currencies are safe for the time being from the Software-Defined Acronyms.

A distinction without much of a difference
Onisick's differentiation between software defined-data center and cloud computing isn't bad for now, but the boundaries imagined within it won't stand up very long. The private cloud will find ways to incorporate legacy systems, and the software-defined data center will always be trying to evolve in the direction of cloud automation.

Re: inspiration
Well said Brian, I guess this SDx concept has overtaken nerves of Network/ DC Managers. Idea was to adapt the type of work required rather than sharing workload manually.

Re: A distinction without much of a difference
So Charlie, do you think there are any differences differences, or is SDN just the adoption of cloud computing with another label?

Brian, that's a great one. I think we may need to start making a list for a follow-up guide :)

You don't think there's any chance some of them will have the decency to be embarrassed into silence for a little while?
