The Thinning Of The Datacenter

Appliances that link on-premises systems to cloud resources will mean datacenters with less equipment – in smaller facilities.

The future
I see cloud capacity readily delivered anywhere complete out modular data centres using hardware much like the large Public Cloud providers do and at a similar owner's TCO. Naturally micro Public Cloud opportunities will arise but Private Clouds delivered inhouse or as a managed service will always be prefered by large orgs inorder to retain management and controll of their mission critical infrastructure. So I don't see how data centres will thin unless they outsource part or whole of the primary compute and storage capacity.

@cbabcock....  what you descripe sounds like a hybrid solution and one that I wouldnt consider a "quick fix" but a solution.

IAAS

I can see why IAAS is thinning datacenters. The need for all these physical boxes is fading. This began with virtualization but has been taken to another level with IAAS. It's a win win really. Less power consumption is one of the benefits along with the others that Andres has mentioned in this informative post.

Gateway appliances -- is this a way to slenderize the data center?
A gateway appliance, knowledgeable about both local and cloud storage, can broker between them and combine some of their best elements. That allows storage in the cloud to supplement what's in the data center. Does relying on that combination ultimately lead to a thinner data center, with less hardware in it? Or is it a temporary fix?

2014 Private Cloud Survey
Respondents are on a roll: 53% brought their private clouds from concept to production in less than one year, and 60% extend their clouds across multiple datacenters. But expertise is scarce, with 51% saying acquiring skilled employees is a roadblock.
