At this week's Supercomputing (SC) 2010 conference, Microsoft Corp. took the next step in its self-appointed mission to bring high-performance computing - aka supercomputing - to the masses. Company officials say its "democratizing" aim is to bring supercomputing capacity into the hands of everybody who has a need for it and wants to use it. A number of challenges face cloud-based HPC, says Wu, including security, data locality and transfer speed, data integration, price and service level agreements. "We don't expect to see rapid ramp up on cloud migration in HPC until we see dramatic improvement in the above areas. Therefore, the new progress from Microsoft will likely bring small influence in cloud adoption in certain industries (bio) but no major impact is expected."
