HP Fast Tracks Private Cloud With Cloud Start: Page 2 of 2

The advantage of a quick-start program like Cloud Start is obvious. For a fraction of the cost and time to build a private cloud, you can have one running. Building a private cloud from scratch is difficult. "We tried to build a private cloud. We tried to use free software and lower cost hardware because we wanted to make it inexpensive. It was taking too long to deliver. We gave up. We faced a chicken and egg problem, the private cloud had to be working before we could get people on it and people have to be on it before they will invest in it, " Ganger said.

Other integrators like IBM can offer similar consulting and build-out services, but they aren't promising the 30 turnaround time that HP is. The biggest value here may not be the speed of the deployment but the expertise in planning the initial deployment as well as road mapping future growth. By standardizing on HP hardware and software, scaling your private cloud upward is going to be far simpler than using a hardware and software from a variety of vendors because your selected integrator should be ensuring that the products integrate together.

Clearly, HP wants you to standardize on HP hardware and software, and that may not be a good fit due to fear of lock-in or a preference for other equipment. There are a number of data center automation vendors like BMC, Gale Technologies and Novell that offer support for a broader set of products, but like any multi-vendor implementation, someone is going to have to do the integration and on-going maintenance as products rev. If you go this route, just be prepared to take on more maintenance burden.
