Just a quick note regarding our newly "re-added" comment functionality to The Daily Blog, using J-Soft's REblogger.
Since most of the content on The Daily Blog comes from the nearly subconscious minds of our editors, you can save any derision for letters to the dNew York Times...they just won't get it. Instead we invite you to try this service out as an "annotation" tool, so feel free to improve, update, and redirect our posts at will.

Well, it's nearly the end of the year as we know it, and I feel fine. In honor of the impending 2002 wink-out, I thought you would enjoy a few off-beat 2002 lists to take you through the new year.

If we're going to link to AYB, we can't forget The Terrible Secret of Space. Warning: This video is disturbingly odd, doesn't make sense, and should not be viewed by children, the sane, hamsters, or frozen banana slices.

2002 in Review, ala Google.com
By
Brad Shimmin
at 06:02 PM
It's nearly that time of year, when Google updates its annual Zeitgeist list...the top of the top of all things Pop. December is still MIA, but you can find out which celebrities, world events, and mobile phone ring tones had the world googling in 2002. My personal favorite "top search"?
"All your base are belong to us."

By

Good morning. We've just published the first installment of our year-end extravaganza, the Survivor's Guide to 2003. Each week until January, we'll bring you a close look at the industry from an IT professional's perspective. This week, Mike Fratto sets some difficult priorities for Security, while Dave Molta analyzes the future of Mobile and Wireless.
Also, we've posted some new content/services to nwc.com. Enjoy.
As always, you can grab the entire contents of the new issue from our RSS feed, or you can browse for stories here.

Hackers on TV
By
Mike DeMaria
at 07:26 AM
Hackers on TV. Here's another TV special on that mythical creature, this time done by TLC. I'm wondering if it will do justice to the title of hacker, or be another MTV True Life: Hackers disgrace. Show airs Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday.

Chugging along
By
Lori MacVittie

Thanks to James Lutter who pointed out that IE 6.0 users would encounter problems with the NWC Inc. web site.
We're using cookies to navigate through the site ( we store the customer id and first name of the customer ) and there were some issues with IE 6.0 evolving from a combination of hiding the site within a frame and not having a valid P3P policy available. So I've used a URL rewrite instead and added a P3P policy to the site and all appears to be well on IE 6.0.
Just don't bookmark the URL as it will be changing as soon as ChoiceOne routes our class C to us. Keep accessing via our blog and all will be peachy keen.
On the moving forward front, I've changed a few things to assist in the menu structure being dynamic and also got the shopping cart functionality working. Feel free to play around and fill up your cart. You can't check out yet, but that's coming soon.
Well, maybe not too soon... I will be enjoying a lengthy vacation starting on Monday so the updates may be less frequent. Will there be updates? Probably. Why? 'Cause deep down I'm still a code monkey and I'm having a great time building these applications.
Keep the suggestions and comments coming - they're helpful and we really love the feedback!

Beware the Initiative
By
Tom LaSusa
at 02:15 PM
No, it's not some evil government faction - but according to Mike Fratto, the Initiative for Software Choice (ISC) may as well be.
In a special online-only buzzcut, Mike explains how this organization is all about actually squashing choice - and their main target is open source.

AOL ends popups but not quite
By
Mike DeMaria
at 08:04 AM
AOL ends popups ads. That's good. But they are rethinking about using rich-media advertising. That's bad. AOL will no longer accept 3rd party popups. That's good. But they will still use popups for advertising AOL and Time Warner features. That's bad. AOL's new version lets users block popups. That's good. This drops AOL's EBITDA by about $30 million, but helps retain customers. We don't know what that means. When I closed this article I got TWO popups. Rrrrrrrrr.

December 2nd issue online
By

at 08:37 PM
Good day everyone. After a lengthy hiatus, we're back on the air with the latest issue of Network Computing for your perusal. In addition to the usual set of Sneak Previews and Workshops, we've got a terrific feature on our Wisconsin-based application testing lab, NWC Inc. We invite you to read how we got this enterprise-class applications testing off the ground. But for a more immediate view of what's going on in Green Bay, you can read our blow-by-blow weblog, view a "centerfold" image of the lab infrastructure, or take one of our test applications out for a spin.
As always, you can grab the entire contents of the new issue from our RSS feed, or you can browse for stories here.
Here are a few other features new to the site this week.

NWC Inc., creating quality widgets since 2002
By
Tom LaSusa
at 05:33 PM
As you may have noticed with the publication of this week's magazine, we have officially launched NWC Inc.! Kudos and congrats go out to Lori, Steve, Ron, et al. for their great work in sending this ship out to sea successfully. In honor of its maiden voyage (and to belabor this analogy), we invite you to come aboard and take a look about. You can of course check out our "centerfold" diagram of the lab infrastructure to get an idea of just how much wire, chip, and circuit went into this endeavor.
But rather than simply reading about the lab, we think you might enjoy trying out one of its first test applications. Built by Lori Macvittie, this customer database contains a series of NWC Inc. Widgets, which you can browse. You can also view current widget orders. To garner full functionality, just log in as cromack / cromack. We hope you find it interesting. Because this is a work in progress, Lori asks that you send her comments/questions on the database...but be gentle.
