RAID Subsystem: Symbios MetaStor Department System

For high-bandwidth, high-availability data storage, the only real option is a RAID subsystem. And if you want to kick your bandwidth into overdrive at a blistering 100 to 200 MB per second, turn to a FC-AL (Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop) architecture.

Symbios' MetaStor Department System and RAIDTEC Corp.'s FibreRAID dueled it out to the finish in this category. Both provide everything you want in an FC-AL disk array: strong hardware RAID support, true fiber, strong management software, excellent service and support, and solid upgradability.

In the end, MetaStor won the day, thanks to a combination of the best upgradability, performance and management software around. That doesn't mean MetaStor should rest on its laurels, however--RAIDTEC promises another strong run to the finish next year.

The MetaStor unit, which can be configured as a standalone or rack-mounted unit, uses the superb MetaStor SYMplicity Storage Manager, which lets you do everything from designating hot-spares to creating multiple logical arrays.

As for service, the 230-pound wheeled Department Storage Manager comes with 20 drive bays, an optional 10-bay expansion unit, redundant and hot-swappable power supplies and a battery backup.
