To ODBC Or To JDB C, That Is The Question

By Joe Caponi  Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of the most popular database access middleware of all time, or to take arms against a sea of platforms and access your databases through a browser. Hamlet's inability to select an API was his undoing (well, some problem was his undoing), but you won't share his fate, because you can read our latest Network Design Manual chapter. Author Barry Nance examines ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) and JDBC (Java Database Connectivity), and how, though they mean different things to different people, each can provide you with reliable, flexible data access. The Network Design Manual is at www.NetworkComputing.com/netdesign/series .htm.

All in all, Hamlet likely would have been happier going to Las Vegas than back to Denmark. If you're attending next month's NetWorld+Interop show there, you'll likely be happier at our Network Intelligence Briefing than somewhere else, gambling your money away. The briefing, which is on May 4 at 5:30 p.m., will preview the latest network analysis and troubleshooting products and services. We're giving away 100 pairs of tickets to the briefing, and you can sign up now at www.Network

Computing.com/online/nispring98.html. There you'll also find more information on the Network Analysis and Design Forum, presented by the Pine Mountain Group and Network Computing in conjunction with N+I, offering workshops and certification to conquer your network problems.
