Video Server: WebFORCE MediaBase

S licon Graphics is setting the pace for the video server market. With its WebFORCE Media Server and Cosmo MediaBase software, the company has built a system that delivers content management, Web integration, scalability, logging and access control. WebFORCE provides the only Web-based end-to-end solution for administration and delivery of MPEG 1 and 2 video. These features set WebFORCE apart from other products that have good streaming technology, but do not provide a solution that's as complete.

WebFORCE's Cosmo MediaBase uses a relational database to manage and search content, and it supports both unicast and multicast IP-based transmission. WebFORCE also utilizes the Irix XFS file system facilities to maintain streaming data rates fr om the disks--rather than proprietary storage systems--so standard backup software can be used. Client platform support includes software and hardware MPEG decoding on Microsoft Windows95 and NT and some Unix platforms.

First Virtual Corp.'s Network Video Solution receives an honorable mention for support of ATM and ATM quality of service (QoS). First Virtual uses proprietary technology, but as ATM standards mature, that should change. First Virtual has demonstrated the viability of ATM as an infrastructure choice for QoS-dependent technologies
