E-Mail/Voicemail Integration Product: Octel Unified Messenger

W hat the world needs now is a slick and intuitive voice and e-mail interface--one familiar site where users can interact with both technologies. Well-Connected winner Octel Communications Corp.'s Unified Messenger delivers just that. Cleverly leveraging the e-mail capabilities of Microsoft Exchange as a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) service provider, Unified Messenger stores voicemail messages within an Exchange inbox so users can retrieve them with a telephone handset or a multimedia PC.

Voice messages are read and e-mail messages are converted with text-to-speech (TTS) technology. When an e-mail message is sent to a voice-only user, the system converts the message to speech before delivering it. The user can then listen to the message and reply by voice to the sender. Unified Messenger lets the user easily save or delete messages from the handset and instantly synchronizes the Exchange message store.

Unified Messenger's single message store, single directory and single administrative point make this product singularly easy to manage. By clicking the new "Voice Mail" tab when establishing an account, the administrator activates the voicemail capability, giving the user a combined voice-e-mail inbox. The Exchange directory entry is replicated to other Exchange domains automatically.
