Web Server Management Software: DynaBase
W
eb technology is fundamentally flawed. The Web was designed as a convenient way to add simple markups and hyperlinks, but today's Web sites stretch those boundaries. To alleviate the aches and pains of managing a Web site, scores of tools have hit the market. They offer everything from automated link-checking to back-end databases and servers that rewrite documents on the fly.
Products like Inso Corp.'s DynaBase (made by subsidiary Electronic Book Technologies), WebMate Technologies' WebMate/Foundation and Netscape Communications Corp.'s LiveWire all take the task of administrating a Web site to new heights. But DynaBase is a quantum leap ahead of any existing Web server. DynaBase forgoes storing individual files on disk and, ins
tead, imports each page, image and object into a database, so it's not necessary to rewrite links when a page is moved from one directory to another.
In addition, EBT has added a scripting language to its DynaBase Web product. When embedded into existing HTML documents, these scripting
languages are interpreted every time the page is served to a client. Last, but certainly not least, DynaBase's extensive tools for managing a team of Web developers include revision control and several layers of user security.
Although it lacks DynaBase's document management tools, honorable mention WebMate/Foundation is a powerful tool for creating dynamic Web applications. Meanwhile, Netscape's LiveWire plays a dual role, managing Web pages and links, as well as housing powerful database connectivity tools for writing Web-to-database applications.
