Internet Service Provider: UUNET Technologies
M
aybe anybody can be an Internet service provider (ISP), but it takes something more for enterprise-class Internet service. You need a large network span, a range of services and competitive pricing. UUNET Technologies delivers on all counts. UUNET has 845 U.S. and international points of presence (POPs), with a meshed 45-Mbps backbone, used exclusively for Internet traffic. It has both analog and ISDN dial services, including secured virtual private network dial-up services.
With UUNET's well-structured and competitive connectivity service offerings, you need bite off only as much of the Internet as you want to chew. Monthly service fees for connectivity start at $425 for frame relay over 56-Kbps access circuits. From there,
you can grow connections to 128 or 512 Kbps, then T1 and beyond. Double T service offers two T1 pipes with Border Gateway Protocol version 4 (BGP4)-based load-balancing, and 10Plus service provides a full 10-Mbps Ethernet connection to the backbone.
UUNET can reduce access costs as a r
esult of its merger with MFS Communications Co. Ethernet connectivity for the 10Plus service, for example, is now provided through MFS connections. Look for new services from the pair this year. Users of the Microsoft Network, GE Information Services' GE Business Pro and GTE Internet Solutions are using UUNET for Internet services. Many potential competitors have also inked Internet outsourcing deals with UUNET, a telling endorsement of the quality of its services.
