1997 IS/Network Manager Salary Survey

The Regional Accent
Cost of living certain ly affects salary, and the mean salaries for each region appear in Figure 13. Certain regions of the United States stand above the mean: New York metro (at $69,580, it's 21 percent above the mean), Mid-Atlantic ($60,930, which is 6 percent above average), Pacific Northwest ($59,440, 3 percent above the mean) and California/West ($59,390, also three percent above the mean).


On the other end are those in Rocky Mountain states (15 percent below the average), Midwest (13 percent below), South (13 percent down), New England (6 percent below), Texas/Southwest (5 percent down) and the Mid-East/North Central states (4 percent below). In many of the so-called mean losers, such as the Midwest and the South, cost of living is also much lower than in places like New York and California.

The most populous regions are Mid-East/North Central with 17.1 percent of the survey respondents, New York Metro with 15.8 percent, California and the West, and the Southeast.
