Joel Halpern

Elegantly moving packets and people from one place to another is Joel Halpern's mission. He'll need his technical skills, plus a diplomatic bent, for his next challenge--to enable the IP and ATM specifications to work together at a time when the Internet Engineering Task Force and the ATM Forum have not seen anything eye to eye. Halpern will facilitate Multiprotocol Over ATM (MPOA) work in the ATM Forum and the spec for operating IPv6 over ATM. Halpern is one of two key designers of Public Network-to-Node Interface (PNNI), the protocol for routing ATM switched virtual circuits. To his credit is much of MPOA. He is also the IETF routing area director, and most recently he worked on Mobile-IP and interdomain multicast routing. n Millennium Forecast: The most significant innovation to users, if we can deliver it, will be the appearance of a continuously available "sufficiently fast" Internet no matter where the user is. n Millennium Disturbance: Further shifts in the application domain that will make delivering the innovation more difficult.
