Best Internet or Web Server: Quarterdeck's Webstar Shines Among Servers

The people at Quarterdeck knew what they were doing when they acquired StarNine and its product Webstar. Touted as the most widely used commercial Web server, Webstar offers incredibly easy installation and configuration running on a Macintosh or PowerMac. Third-party support is phenomenal, and a version is in the works that will implement the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

Although Unix-based servers tend to dominate the huge Web data resources, Webstar will get your site up in a matter of minutes. Third-party software supports d iscussion groups (Web Crossing), page updates from users (Net Forms) and other tasks. In addition, using the intuitive personal filesharing built into the MacOS, you can change and update content without learning any Unix commands.

Process Software's Purveyor is a top-notch product, but the market for third-party support hasn't grown as quickly for Windows NT.
