Best Cable Tester: LANMeter Passes The Test With Flying Colors
The name says it all. The Fluke 685 Enterprise LANMeter adds the enterprise
functionality not found in the 675 LANMeter. While all the requisite cable
tests are still there for both Ethernet and Token-Ring, the 685 adds nifty
protocol-specific features such as SNMP agent discovery, IP host configuration
verification, IP trace route, and NetBIOS discovery and ping. The Internet
toolkit function turns the 685 into a mini SNMP console with the ability
to perform system group and router table queries, as well as the ability
to show RMON statistics.
Other protocol-specific features, such as the IP ICMP monitor, Novell server
discovery, ping and routing analysis, along with the VINES server discovery
features, are carry-overs from the 675 LANMeter. Token-Ring users will continue
to enjoy the real-time node map and jitter testing, while ongoing collision
and CRC error counts will please Ethernet users. Everything about the 685
Enterprise LANMeter is big--the size, the features and the price. But if
you've got to have it all to test both cables and nodes, this is the one.
