Best Wireless Solution: Norand PEN*KEY Prevails As A Wireless Solution


Exponential growth can cover many sins, but when markets take off more slowly than expected, only the toughest companies prevail. Two darling technologies of the early '90s--pen computing and wireless data--claimed many overenthusiastic victims, yet several firms managed to find niches and prosper.

Among the survivors is Norand, whose PEN*KEY 6300 handheld computer is a tour de force of advanced technology. This Windows-compatible, pen-based appliance housed in an industrial-strength package, can be configured with almost any wir eless option. Wide area options include RAM Mobitex, ARDIS, paging, cellular and CDPD, while local area communications include both 915-MHz and 2.4-GHz unlicensed spread spectrum as well as IRDA infrared.

Used primarily in vertical market materials-handling applications, the PEN*KEY 6300 was the first truly rugged wireless computer in space, blasting off on the Space Shuttle Atlantis as part of NASA's experimental wireless network program.
