Win95 Info On The Web

For information, resources and discussions about Microsoft's Windows95, see Phil Jones "Windows95 Page" at http://biology.queensu.ca/~jonesp/ . Jones' Web page includes pointers to 32-bit shareware and freeware apps, screen shots, news, Win95-oriented TCP/IP info, programming tips and links to Microsoft and other Internet resources.

Better Self-Installing 'Internet Packages' Begin To Arrive

Putting "Internetware" on your PC and getting an account is becoming easier, finally. Although CompuServe's Internet installer cheerfully renames any other WINSOCK.DLLs it can find (yes, the documentation alerts you, but how hard would it have been to avoid the need to do this?), new installation programs from Internet providers and software vendors are beginning to show.

NetCom's NetCruiser was one of the first to make this easy. Of course, it didn't have to deal with the "choose a provider" step. Boston-area-based TIAC (The Internet Access Company) has a single-disk package that only needs your name, password, IP number and COM port, and asks you to pick a phone number to use. In less than 10 minutes, it had Trumpet WinSock and SLIP up and connecting, and a browser up and browsing.

Other Internet providers are doing likewise. Of course, packages like NetManage Chameleon offered a limited choice of vendors.

Netscape will be offering a bundled package including its Navigator, Eudora Lite, and a few other apps. It also includes installer/registration modules that can get you onto any of a selected set of major Internet providers or, with a little more effort, to a provider not on its built-in list.

This is part of the next wave of Internet access. The challenge will be letting users keep their options open--and not freezing the market with preemptively short custom provider lists.
