Disk Prices Affect HSM Decision

HSM is an excellent solution for keeping faster disk space available. However, with the falling price of hard drives, HSM may not be your best solution. HSM setup and administration are not trivial, so make sure you weigh the options before jumping in.

Magnetic disk prices have fallen to $3,500 for a 9-GB drive. For the basic HP 20XT jukebox, the investment is around $7,000 for the jukebox and another $1,800 to populate it, which will give you about 20 GB of storage. For that price, you could have about the same capacity in fast hard disks.
