Best Network Backup Software

Palindrome Is Tops In Backup Software

If you manage enterprise data on your NetWare servers, you have two choices: Palindrome's Network Archivist and Legato's NetWorker. The Legato product gets the nod if you're dealing with a mixed Unix and NetWare environment or you need top speed in backup. If you're using NT, check out Backup Exec from Arcada. But for everyone else, Network Archivist walks away with the blue ribbon.
We've used Network Archivist to back up our lab servers in San Mateo for more than a year, and we have been completely satisfied. Network Archivist uses what Palindrome calls intelligent storage management. The idea behind the marketing term is that the administrator defines a set of goals and lets the system decide the details of which files should be backed up, archived or migrated at which time. In effect, it reduces the number of files backed up along with cutting down the amount of time you need to spend ensuring that the data on the system is adequately protected. Your servers will never run out of disk space with this product.
Palindrome's hallmark Tower of Hanoi tape rotation algorithm, combined with a clever tape partitioning scheme, maximizes data availability on a minimum number of tapes. Network Archivist automatically handles file migration, ensuring that disk space will always be available on the server. And since disk space is always a premium, this feature is essential.
Palindrome has taken a sophisticated product and made it easy to use with great documentation and superior error-reporting capabilities. Full use of Novell's St orage Management Services (SMS) and demonstrated media interchangeability via the System Independent Data Format (SIDF) with other products only serves to enhance the utility of this state-of-the-art data management tool.
