Best HSM Software

Cheyenne's HSM 1.0 Takes Top Honors

Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) promises near bottomless pits of storage for modern computer networks. HSM software automatically migrates files between more expensive, higher-speed magnetic disk and less costly but slower juke-box-based optical disc and magnetic tape units. NetWare networks are a perfect target for HSM systems, since NetWare tends to support large numbers of users with seemingly insatiable appetites for file storage.
Although all three of the candidates for our Well-Connected Award offer quality products, Cheyenne's HSM v1.0 takes the prize. HSM is very impressive. Its overall design is excellent. It offers totally transparent file migration, requiring no special software on the user workstation and no TSRs. It works with all available NetWare operating system versions, and supports a very wide range of HSM storage hardware options. It has excellent documentation and is very easy to install. Plus it offers excellent integration of HSM and file backup services.
Initial setup is very easy. A well-designed Microsoft Windows-based utility guides you through the complexities of both software and hardware installation. Another Windows utility makes it easy to configure and manage the system on a day-to-day basis.
Cheyenne HSM's architectural design is the best, allowing installation of software and hardware on either dedicated or nondedicated servers. It's the network designer's choice. HSM hardware can be distributed across a network, making it easier to balance network traffic. Cheyenne's design helps to ensure that files on HSM storage devices are fully and properly backed up.
