What's The Word On The Internet?

Welcome to "The Internet Page," Network Computing's periscope on what's happening on and about Internets. My turf will encompass products, services, resources, events, news and tips, plus the occasional opinion and perhaps one or two Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) on the lighter side.

What's New In Web Browsers

The 1.0 beta of "Mozilla" (Netscape) is available from ftp.netscape.com . Download it, give it a try and see how quickly you get used to the "text ASAP while filling graphics" approach, and how rapidly you note that even this isn't good enough. Dial-up users will want a stack. I'm using the Trumpet WinSock 2.0 -- the new version of Peter Tatum's Trumpet shareware stack with PPP, in twsk20b.zip . You can find it on many shareware ftp servers, including ftp.cica.indiana.edu/~ftp/ pub/pc/win3/winsock .

Still SLIPless In Seattle?

Dial-up Windows users with Unix shell accounts will likewise want to download the latest update to SlipKnot (http://www.interport.net/slip-knot/slipknot.html or slipknot@micromind.com) for GUI Web browsing through their account. The new version should include Gopher support. Also check out I-term (FTP:://wuarchive.wustl.edu/pub/msdos_uploads/inter-net/iterm.zip) . For general browser news and discussion, follow alt.dcom.slip-emulators and comp.infosystems.www.users.

Authors Get Hyper

Want to create HTML documents and pages with less pain? We're awash in HTML authoring tools: Microsoft's HTML extensions to Word for Windows should be available from ftp. microsoft.com . Be warned, as CMP's Open Systems Today notes, this may be a RAM pig…Novell announced WordPerfect Internet Publisher for Windows as an add-on extension to WordPerfect 6.1 (available free from http: //www.novell.com ), and the Publisher Pro version for money, bundling in Netscape, viewers and other stuff.
