Executive Summary: DLT 8000 Tape Libraries
Tape libraries may not be the sexiest device in your enterprise, but they're a trusty standby. Having a full set of backups stored off-site can save your ass in the event of data loss or a disaster.
To help you sort through the options, we put tape libraries from Advanced Digital Information Corp. (ADIC), Compaq Computer Corp., Overland Data, Qualstar Corp. and Quantum ATL through their paces. After lots of poking and prodding, the Overland Neo Series LXN4000 took our Editor's Choice honor thanks to its scalability, ease of use and quality features. The compact, well-priced Quantum ATL M1500 won our Best Value award; it would be a solid choice for smaller companies that plan to expand their data centers.
Finally, they say you can't please all of the people all of the time, and we knew that would be the case when we decided on DLT 8000 as the format of choice for this review. However, the Digital Linear Tape format is widely supported, and many tested libraries are available in other flavors.
