Advanced Micro Devices has been a player in the semiconductor industry since 1969 and a microprocessor manufacturer since 1975. Over the past 33 years, it has become a multibillion-dollar company with manufacturing facilities worldwide and more than 14,000 employees.

With its multiprocessor chipset and processor architecture now in its seventh generation, is AMD ready to steal the crown from Intel and take the throne as the No. 1 x86 processor manufacturer for Microsoft Windows-based PCs and servers?

In order to accomplish this lofty goal, AMD is going to need support from tier-1 vendors and corporate buyers alike. Most major PC manufacturers have installed AMD processors in their PCs for home use for several years now, but none have taken the plunge and use AMD processors in their business-class desktops, workstations or servers. That should change: AMD has raised the bar on speed and performance with its Athlon processor line and should be seriously considered for mainstream business markets.
