  • Know the difference between capital and operational budget expenditures.

  • Keep tabs on where your dollars are going. Sounds simple, but in many cases it's not.

  • Know when -- and when not -- to delegate budgeting tasks.

  • Keep your subordinates in the loop on your cash flow, and make sure your bosses do the same for you. Regular meetings are a wise idea.

  • Consider a charge-back model.
