Do:

  • Include an unbiased evaluation of current and future needs.

  • List and explain (in plain English, please) possible technology solutions.

  • Frame these solutions as they relate to cost, reliability and scalability.

  • Offer your professional assessment of the best course of action.

  • Keep the IRFC as short and sweet as possible, and include a summary.

  • Distribute it to all levels of the organization.

  • Make it easy for recipients to offer feedback. No laughing is allowed, at least until the respondent is out of range.

Don't:

  • Etch your plans in stone before you solicit feedback.

  • Get mired in petty details -- remember, everyone has the same goal: Finding the best solution.

  • Be surprised if good ideas come from unlikely sources.
