New products get born into this world as orphans. Engineers conceive ideas and birth new standards that promise bright futures. But getting a standard adopted into products and fully realizing its potential are not the reasons engineers come to work. Engineers germinate and strengthen designs but aren't interested in sticking around for the 2 a.m. feeding. It's wham, bam and on to the next idea. We often complain that a four- or five-year-old standard is barely crawling along. However, it takes time to guide a standard into maturity. it's even harder in products when new standards emerge every nine months because protocol engineers are so prolific.
