Price is Right

The downturn in the U.S. economy is being noted by tech employment agencies. According to the San Francisco Bay area's Bennett Warren of Remx Technology Group, contract workers and full-time job seekers are bringing in half of what they were demanding a year ago. Still, in many cases--especially where you might hire a contract worker or a temp--interns supply a more financially justifiable, nonjaded work force.

  • An intern can expect to earn any amount, from school credit to $20 an hour, depending on experience and education.

  • In the San Francisco Bay area, an entry-level IT temp worker--helpdesk, desktop support, tech writer--earns $15 to $30 an hour.

  • The average starting salary in New York for an IT entry-level position ranges from $45,000 to $55,000 per year.
