Holding Out a Helping Hand

Accommodating people with disabilities isn't just the law; it's good for business. The federal government offers tax breaks, and deepening the labor pool is always beneficial. But where can you find products and services to make your company accessible? Here are some samples of assistive technologies and sites where you can learn more.

  • Keybowl orbiTouch Keyless Keyboard: The orbiTouch has two domes on which the hands or wrists rest. These domes move in eight positions, comparable with compass points. Users type by gently sliding the domes; a mouse is integrated into the keyboard. This product is good for sufferers of carpal tunnel syndrome.

  • BrailleNote: BrailleNote offers e-mail, organizational and word-processing capabilities, and when combined with a screen reader and plugged into a serial port, the product braille-enables a PC.

  • LCTechnologies Eyegaze Computer System: The Eyegaze is a computer-input system designed for use by individuals with cerebral palsy, spinal-cord injury or brain injury. The device takes 60 pictures per second of the user's eye to determine where he or she is looking on the screen and enables speech synthesis, control of lights and appliances, typing, operation of a telephone, and running of both mouse- and keyboard-controlled applications.

Speech synthesizers, screen readers, mouth-stick controls, foot- and voice-operated mice, and many more products are available. AbleData is a federally funded project that offers a wealth of information on assistive technology products.

    Other Helpful Sites:

  • www.resna.org: Nonprofit group promotes the use of technology to improve the potential of people with disabilities.

  • www.access-board.gov; www.itpolicy.gsa.gov/cita/index.htm: Government sites have extensive info on the ADA and other federal programs.

  • janweb.icdi.wvu.edu/: Job Accommodation Network offers answers to specific accommodation questions.
