In my years of testing vendor equipment, both for Network Computing and for a carrier, I've found that I need to be more than just an engineer. Part of the job entails being a politician, and often it requires the artful skills of a Jerry Springer bouncer. Since video-over-IP networks are still relatively new, the vendors I worked with actually seemed to like each other and viewed each other's strengths as pluses for the industry as a whole. If only I could see such maturity in the rest of the vendor world.
