Executive Summary

High-Density KVM Switches

The need for more-sophisticated KVM switches is upon us. High port counts, security features, longer control distances and network manageability are demanded in a growing number of network environments. At the same time, the simple usability found in most traditional KVM switches needs to be paired with the new requirements brought on by the explosive growth of modern server farms.

We tested four KVM platforms by attaching to servers and other machines running Linux, Sun Microsystems Solaris and most flavors of Microsoft Windows. Testing included setup, configuration and typical KVM use in a heterogeneous environment. Switches were accessed through TCP/IP and directly controlled at 500-foot distances.

Raritan Computer's Paragon switch wins our Editor's Choice award. With Paragon's modular components and integral use of simple Category 5 wiring for system connections, the built-in high port count is easily distributed. When combined with Raritan's TeleReach network interface, the powerful Paragon becomes fully accessible over the Internet.
