Document Management Dazel Corp. HP Document Router New. Many a fast-growing company has found itself in need of an output-management system--after all, it does little good to fax a timely alert to a sales manager if his or her machine was unplugged by the cleaning crew. With an eye to this market, Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Dazel subsidiary has released its HP Document Router, a plug-and-play appliance that lets midsize companies cost-effectively track document delivery. Using any application's standard print command, a user can send documents via a number of methods, including network printer, e-mail, Internet, fax machine or copier. The device resends files automatically in the event of failure. The router supports applications that can print across Microsoft Windows, Unix, AS/400, Mac OS and many mainframe platforms. Dazel touts the device's ability to reduce helpdesk calls by providing a common network resource for all output devices.

Streaming-media Security Software Greenhouse Technologies StreamKeeper Improved. As high-quality delivery of streaming media becomes a reality, many ISPs, ASPs and telcos are looking to offer their customers a secure method to deliver, for example, distance learning, security and surveillance applications, private online meeting spaces, and entertainment. Greenhouse Technologies' Streamkeeper provides verification for user-access rights while tracking the duration and frequency of access to a product or service. The product, now in use by Swedish telecom giant Telia Telecom AB, comes in three versions: a turnkey offering, StreamKeeper Commerce Center; StreamKeeperSDK, a software developer's kit for internal use by organizations; and StreamKeeper VendorSDK, for software vendors and security providers. Surf Monitoring SurfControl SuperScout 3.0.2 Improved. SurfControl has released an updated version of the SuperScout monitoring solution that corrects some problems in an earlier version of the product. In a Sneak Preview in November, we found some bugs in SuperScout version 3.0. In the new version, SuperScout 3.0.2, the blocking capability has been improved. I was not able to get any Web traffic from blocked sites on my test network, even with a machine that was less powerful than the initial test machine used back in the November Sneak Preview. However, the only notification of violations is by individual e-mail, which can greatly add up over time, especially if the user keeps hitting refresh in his or her browser. The reporting aspects of SuperScout seem to be improved. I did not see any of the incorrect figures encountered in the previous review; however, this system was not under the same stress as in the earlier testing. A free trial is available, as well as the patch to 3.0.2.
Available: Now. License begins at $1,195 for 50 seats on the network.
