In addition to testing the four products in this review, we looked at a beta
version of GraphOn Corp.'s GraphOn Bridges for Unix and Linux. We installed
GraphOn Bridges on a Sun Microsystems Enterprise Ultra 10 running Solaris
2.6 with Apache as a Web server. We were interested to see what Web-enabling
features Bridges provides. The install script was intuitive and made for a
trouble-free installation. At the conclusion of the installation, the
software automatically produced a license from the vendor.
The beta product included three client applications: a native client, a Java
client, and plug-in components for Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet
Explorer. When launched through the Web browser, Bridges brings a user to X
Windows in a maximized Web browser window.
In a brief test of this product, server applications seemed to run quite
well over a LAN connection. Although we did not test the performance of GraphOn's
beta software against that of Tarantella Enterprise 3, which performs some
similar Unix functions, GraphOn claims its final product will perform better
than Tarantella Enterprise on low-bandwidth connections.
GraphOn also has a version of Bridges for Windows in beta that will run on
Windows NT and should offer functionally similar to those of other products
tested here. In addition, load-balancing is planned for the next release of
this product. Bridges for Unix and Linux should be available by press date.
