Glossary

  • inode: In a file system, a data structure on the disk storing a file's meta information (such as permissions, ownership and location). In the Linux kernel, a similar data structure representing parts of an open file.

  • iostat: Linux utility for monitoring system input/output device load. Part of the sysstat performance-monitoring package, which is available at perso. wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/.

  • iptraf: Linux utility for monitoring network traffic, available at iptraf.seul.org/.

  • nfspmon: Simple NFS performance-analysis tool, available at tunelinux.com/bin/page?daemons/nfs/nfspmon.html.

  • top: Linux utility for displaying memory and CPU usage of individual processes on a system. While common to most Linux distributions, it is available in the procps package at metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/status/ps/.

  • vmstat: Linux utility for measuring performance of the virtual memory system. Like top, it is also available on most distributions or from the procps package at metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/status/ps/.
