Novell Directory Services Novell's multiplatform NDS offering is the most realistic cross-platform directory vision we've seen. By combining the core strength of Novell's product offerings, NDS, with the tools necessary to unify heterogeneous environments, Novell is attempting to address enterprise directory and authentication challenges that have previously gone unsolved. Novell's solution is still young, however, and has its fair share of problems. Even those organizations familiar with NDS and the NetWare family of administration tools will struggle to get NDS to run on other platforms. Enterprises that are not familiar with NDS unfortunately will have a much greater challenge ahead of them. Novell's inexperience with alternative platforms, such as Unix, is painfully obvious, and its management tools are in a state of disarray. If Novell commits the proper resources to its efforts, wide-scale cross-platform adoption of NDS could become a reality. Unfortunately, we think that's a pretty big if.
