Site Monitoring: The Next Wave Even as the first wave of performance-monitoring services washes over e-commerce, a second, even stronger service wave is building. This tsunami promises to go beyond pure monitoring to provide site diagnostics. That typically requires a different type of architecture, stretching behind the firewall. Most of these services will report back on software installed on or downloaded to the server site and, in some instances, even the client. Many stand to report on the health of applications, devices, operating systems, networks and the overall Internet. Among those announced or soon to be announced are InterNet Resources Group's Red Alert, WRQ's Holistix, and services from MimEcom Corp. and SiteSmith. Some of the most significant plays are being made by:
Finally, there are services that measure performance of a different sort, with metrics that have more to do with assessing how often a company is mentioned across the Internet; where its logos, name and trademarks are being used; and how well marketing campaigns are working. The best known of these broad service providers are Cyveillance and ImageLock. Some outfits, such as eWatch, primarily measure "buzz" over the Internet, while others, such as WebPartner, present an amalgam of Web site monitoring and market intelligence.
