Executive Summary Wireless T1 WANs Spread-spectrum T1 radios provide an appealing alternative to traditional T1 lines for implementing metropolitan and wide area networks. Operating in the 2.4-GHz and 5.8-GHz ISM frequency bands, these systems can be installed in the United States without the need for FCC licensing. Properly engineered and installed on towers or building rooftops, connections can be made at distances up to 50 miles. We evaluated five products in our Syracuse University Real-World Labs® for suitability in supporting voice and data applications. All the products performed acceptably on our voice and data tests, though some provided greater throughput than others. While these systems were relatively easy to install, we were disappointed that none of the products provided SNMP management support.
Glenayre Western Multiplex's Lynx.sc garnered our Editor's Choice award. It performed flawlessly in our tests, and it comes in a variety of configurations, supporting one and two concurrent T1s at both 2.4 and 5.8 GHz (though we tested it at only 5.8 GHz) and four T1s at 5.8 GHz. In addition, we gave P-Com's AirPro T1/ T3 our Best Value award.
