Wireless T1 WANs Make Waves September 20, 1999 Wave Wireless Networking Speedcom T1/E1
Wave Wireless Networking is best known for its wireless Ethernet line of interconnection products, but the company claims that its wireless T1 offering accounts for approximately 20 percent of its business. The Speedcom T1/E1 is a modular unit that includes a very thin two-inch rack-mountable modem and a weatherized mast-mountable RF unit that is connected to and powered by the modem using up to 500 feet of coaxial cable. Unlike the Adtran mast-mount unit, which can be pressurized to withstand an environment of 100 percent humidity condensed moisture, the Wave unit is rated to 95 percent humidity, noncondensing, which certainly will be adequate for most environments.
The product's front-panel back-lit LCD display allows for field-configuration and diagnostics without a terminal. The simple menu system is quite easy to use and represents an interesting alternative to terminal or DIP-switch configuration. A percentage signal LCD indicator allows for easy assessment of RF signal strength, a feature that is useful when positioning antennas. Like all the other vendors, Wave provides jacks on the back of its unit that allow an installer to measure signal strength using a DC volt meter. The Speedcom T1/E1 includes both T1 and E1 interfaces. While the latter is designed for international markets, some domestic organizations might choose to implement the E1 interface in order to benefit from the improved data performance. An optional Windows-based network management system is available but was not supplied to us by Wave. The management system allows you to configure all system parameters using software. Speedcom E1/T1, $7,200 per end/$14,400 per link, Wave Wireless Network, (800) 721-9283, (941) 358-9283; fax (941) 355-0219. www.speedlan.com
