Sizing Up the Quad Squad

September 20, 1999

Executive Summary
Quad-Processor Servers
Intel-based servers are finally working their way into the sweet spot of enterprise networks. Our tests showed very similar performance among all the servers until we reached higher stress levels, when disk subsystem bottlenecks became evident. Although we wouldn't paint these servers as commodities, the one you pick probably will depend as much on your long-term relationship with the vendor as on their testable characteristics; all three that we tested are safe bets. After putting the servers through a month's worth of abuse at KeyLabs, we can say that both the performance and management have markedly improved since our previous tests, making these servers worthy candidates for your applications.

IBM's Netfinity 5500 M20 won our Editor's Choice award for its outstanding combination of performance, management and price. Compaq finished a very close second, with top-ranked performance numbers. But the ProLiant 6500 lacked the management features necessary to best the Netfinity server.

The Hewlett-Packard NetServer LH4 was in a similar boat. Under our testing, the LH4 demonstrated outstanding manageability, but it fell behind in performance at the end of the stress tests.
