Executive Summary IPSec VPNs IPSec VPNs (virtual private networks) haven't yet matured into seamless, painless network tools. But they have progressed to the point where if you are planning to use a VPN in the future, now is the time to get your feet wet and launch that pilot. There are numerous approaches to VPN management--VPNs are complex enough without having to battle management paradigms that don't fit your needs. On the performance front, the news is mostly good. Our Editor's Choice winner, VPNet's VPNware VSU-1100, hit a whopping 81 MB per second throughput during our testing, but that was on a full-duplex link. On high-utilization links, the VPN gateway may be a bottleneck. Only RedCreek's Ravlin 7100 came close to the VSU-1100's performance, registering a negligible drop to 79 MBps.
The VSU-1100 has a relatively simple management interface, passes data quickly and supports a number of certificate authorities. TimeStep's Permit/Gate 7520 came in second with good management and a flexible architecture. If you need a highly configurable VPN gateway, Permit is the device for you. ADI's ADI-4500 finished in fourth place; the vendor still has a ways to go before it can offer the ease of installation and integration to match the other devices we tested. However, to its credit, ADI's management is painless and nearly foolproof.
