Executive Summary Videoconferencing With H.323 Will 2000 be the year that H.323 video delivery is ready for corporate training and distance education? Our lab tests suggest the answer is yes. By next year, interoperability issues that have plagued the industry's transition from the ITU H.323 protocol suite version 1 to version 2 should be resolved. To make H.323 work in your enterprise, you'll need to know if your firewalls are intelligent enough to deal with H.323's port negotiation process, and understand the amount and quality (latency and jitter) of TCP/IP transmission bandwidth that's actually available to your conferences at various times of the day.
VideoServer's Encounter NetServer 1.2.1 and Lucent's MultiMedia Communications Exchange (MMCX) won our Editor's Choice award in the server-based and rack-mounted multipoint conferencing unit categories, respectively. Encounter's ability to offer mixed-mode conference management nudged it ahead, while MMCX, though limited as a pure H.323 MCU, offers the promise of universal connectivity.
