Web Proxy Autodiscovery Protocol The advent of the Proxy Auto Configuration URL has significantly reduced the hassle associated with large proxy-based cache implementations. A new protocol, WPAD (Web Proxy Autodiscovery Protocol), further simplifies proxy configuration by making it completely hands-off at the client end.
In its quest to locate a URL, a WPAD-enabled Web browser first employs DHCP, then SLP. If unsuccessful, the browser then searches for the URL within DNS records--querying from the most specific host name prefixed with "wpad"--and continues up the DNS hierarchy until a record is found. In this way, the Web browser retrieves the most specific proxy configuration possible, with a measure of redundancy. For networks supporting a large number of users, the implementation of WPAD-enabled browsers should significantly reduce technical support for clients with incorrect browser configurations.
IE5 supports WPAD, and RealNetworks G2 products will support WPAD in future versions.
