Executive Summary IP Address Management The IP address management products we tested deliver many of the features on our wish list. The challenge for vendors of existing products is to adapt to accommodate the needs of the growing numbers of DSL (digital subscriber line) and cable modem users. To compete in the telecommunications market, future versions of IP address management tools must include support for PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) and analogous network logins.
In our tests, Nortel Networks NetID handily outperformed its four competitors and nabbed our Editor's Choice award. The Nortel entry included the best user interface--a Java applet served off a Web browser that eliminated the need to install the management software on every client. It also offered the most complete features set, and at a reasonable price to boot.
