For Client/Server, Think Thin

Thin-Client Licensing Costs
Citrix and Microsoft Pricing
PDF Chart

Software licensing costs for remote presentation thin-client computing environments based on Microsoft's Windows NT Terminal Server Edition (TSE) are more affordable than when the product was introduced, mainly because of Microsoft's introduction of Terminal Server client-access licenses (CALs).

Previously, each device that would access a TSE server needed a Windows NT client license, which cost more than twice as much per device as today's arrangement. Users still need to have NT Server CALs, but in many environments those licenses already have been acquired for other applications. While Microsoft does not offer concurrent licensing, Citrix does with its MetaFrame product, so per-user licensing costs drop as the ratio of real users to concurrent users increases. Nonetheless, while MetaFrame adds significant value in enterprise environments, it also adds considerably to the overall system software licensing costs.

Microsoft's TSE license is $1,899 for a 10-user license. Additional users require a $39.95 NT Client License (NT CAL) and $109.95 Terminal Server Client Access License (TSE CAL). No pricing for concurrent users is available.

A MetaFrame license requires Microsoft licensing appropriate for the number of users, plus a MetaFrame Server License ($4,995 for 15 concurrent users) and $200 for each additional concurrent user.
