Is It Time for Linux
May 31, 1999

Executive Summary: Linux
Linux is here and deployed in the enterprise. That's not news. However, while Linux lets Intel hardware do things that NetWare and NT can't, Linux is as complex as Unix. Staffing considerations alone can make Linux as costly to run as NetWare and NT, and indeed approach the expense of proprietary Unix systems. Also, Linux still lacks some high-end features, such as a robust 64-bit file system and advanced clustering technology. Still, its utility and reliability in niche areas is widely accepted.

On the plus side, Linux shows momentum and has garnered the support of some large hardware vendors. Professional development programs are on the way, and the OS continues to mature faster than any of the vendor-driven systems with which it competes. Its strength right now is in running IP-centric applications and Web-server hosting. Be wary of running databases or any application that may need to scale to very large data sets.
