Network Computing's Evaluation of Lucent Technologies' Response
For Lucent Technologies Proposed Backbone Data Center graphic in PDF format

The Lucent Cajun switch platform's interesting combination of Layer 2 and Layer 3 features can provide MediaMagik with a highly fault-tolerant backbone network. Lucent's design includes chassis-based Cajun P550s at every point in the network, with routing between buildings and Layer 2 switching inside buildings. However, the port selection also makes management more difficult, and the solution leaves little room for expansion in the core.

Lucent Technologies
Pros
· Highly fault tolerant

Cons
· Complex Layer 2-Layer 3 combination complicates management
· Limited scalability

Lucent recommends two Layer 3-enabled Cajun P550s at the core of the network to handle routing, aggregation and connection to the production and backup servers. At the distribution layer, a combination of Layer 2 and Layer 3 modules provides the necessary gigabit fanout to drive the Cajun switches in the wiring closet.

At the edge, Lucent suggests two P550 Cajun Switches per floor, for 800 ports per building. Lucent provides 32 additional ports per building for growth. The edge devices are linked via a single Gigabit Ethernet downlink, with an additional passive backup link for redundancy. Lucent's solution uses an N+1, hot-swappable power-supply system, adding fault tolerance.

With 3,220 end-user ports, the Lucent configuration costs $573 per port without service and support. Lucent's NetCare service plan allows for 24x7 four-hour support. A three-year contract raises the total cost of ownership to $869 per port.
