Executive Summary: Cryptographic Accelerators
We tested two cryptographic accelerators: nCipher's nFast 300 Cryptographic Accelerator and Rainbow Technologies' CryptoSwift Secure Server Accelerator. Encryption is a must when money is on the line, and both products offload that CPU-intensive task from your Web server. Each solution is pricey, but if your customers are suffering delays because your Web server is slow, either is well worth the investment, which ranges from $4,000 to $10,000.

When choosing an accelerator, the key metrics are scalability, reduced response times and increased transactions per second. Also important are installation and integration with your Web server, as well as the physical security of the devices.
