How We Tested Antivirus Software Download the PDF version of the Antivirus Test Results. We put each antivirus product through a battery of tests to measure its detection, removal and notification of viruses. In addition, we looked at logging, configuration and overall performance. We installed each product on a Dell Optiplex Pentium II 300 MHz with 256 MB of RAM running Windows NT 4.0 server. Although it is possible to run both the virus gateway and mail server on the same system, we decided to use two systems to alleviate system dependencies as well as to better gauge performance and flexibility. Additional plug-ins, soft- ware and management systems for the products being tested were not used during these tests. Our tests attempted not only to verify the WildList certification of these products, but to challenge them with some creative real-world virus possibilities. We also ran tests on file compression, false positive scans, Trojan, backdoor, operating system, hostile applets, VBScript and HTML viruses. In addition, we used several viruses not found on the WildList, including some that have been the cause of security advisories or recently distributed.
